OVERVIEW
Newport is a small coastal city in New England, with a historic centre, active harbour and immense late nineteenth century estates overlooking the Atlantic. Architecture, sailing and cliff walks provide the strongest experiences, while neighbourhood streets reveal an older working port beneath the resort image. Away from the principal landmarks, architecture gives way gradually to cliffs across the wider area.
Summer brings heavy crowds, but quieter mornings and shoulder seasons offer a more relaxed view of the coast. Historic centre draws most attention, but cliffs contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. The relationship between harbour and coast becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
