OVERVIEW
Narva is a city in eastern Estonia, built beside a river facing another major fortress across the border. Wartime destruction and Soviet rebuilding transformed much of the historic urban fabric. Beyond the central area, port and central streets continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use, with central streets providing an additional point of connection.
The castle and river promenade provide the clearest sense of place. Current border procedures should be checked carefully, while the city’s mixed cultural identity adds important contemporary context. A visit centred only on central streets would overlook port, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible, with castle providing an additional point of connection.

THINGS TO DO
Taste regional food scene in Narva
Use Narva’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Narva, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Trace local history at Sangaste Castle in South Estonia
Use Sangaste Castle in South Estonia to understand a specific part of Narva’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Admire Hermann Castle / Narva Museum
Look closely at Hermann Castle / Narva Museum for a concrete introduction to Narva’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
