OVERVIEW
Muscat is a low rise coastal capital stretched between the Gulf of Oman and rugged brown mountains. Government districts, residential areas and historic harbour quarters are separated by long roads rather than one dense centre. The transition between coast and mosques is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre. Beyond the central area, markets and harbour continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Mosques, markets and waterfront walks provide the strongest cultural interest. Distances are substantial, but the restrained architecture and dramatic mountain setting create a distinctive urban character. Mountain terrain provides the most immediate experience, while harbour offers a quieter and more local perspective. The relationship between harbour and mosques becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
