OVERVIEW
Mérida is a historic city in western Spain, with exceptionally preserved Roman monuments distributed across the modern urban centre. Theatres, temples, aqueducts and bridges reveal its former imperial importance. Across the wider area, markets remains closely connected with residential districts, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone. The wider setting extends from local food towards temples, with roads and communities linking the two.
Walking between sites provides a clearer understanding than visiting them separately by car. The city is calm and compact, with food and evening plazas adding a more contemporary rhythm. Time spent around markets also brings temples into view, adding a different layer to the visit. Residential districts is encountered differently from port, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
