OVERVIEW
Melaka is a historic town on Malaysia’s west coast, with former colonial districts, temples, mosques and merchant streets concentrated near the river. Malay, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and British influences remain visible. Settlement follows the relationship between coast and markets, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. Across the wider destination, coast remains physically connected with river, and local settlement follows that relationship.
Food, museums and evening river walks provide the main experiences, while the centre becomes crowded on weekends. Quieter side streets reveal more of the town’s lived in character. Temples draws most attention, but markets contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. The strongest contrast comes between temples and coast, which support different activities and daily rhythms.
