OVERVIEW
Lushan is a mountain region in eastern China, with forested slopes, waterfalls and high plateaux overlooking a broad river valley. Temples, villas and historic retreat settlements are scattered across the landscape. Settlement follows the relationship between mountain terrain and river, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. Temples sits alongside waterfalls, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.
Walking routes and viewpoints provide the main experience, although mist can transform or obscure the scenery. Staying overnight reveals a quieter mountain atmosphere beyond day trip crowds. Forest is encountered differently from waterfalls, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Exploring beyond temples reveals river, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
