OVERVIEW
Lindau is a small historic town on an island in Lake Constance, with narrow streets, colourful buildings and a distinctive harbour entrance. Modern residential districts and transport links continue on the mainland. Settlement follows the relationship between harbour and island interior, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. The transition between island interior and waterfront is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Walking the old town and waterfront reveals the best views, while ferries connect other lake settlements and countries. The centre becomes busy in summer, but evenings retain a calm and intimate atmosphere. Conditions around island interior can differ noticeably from harbour, so flexible timing improves the overall experience. Routes through harbour lead naturally towards historic streets, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.

THINGS TO DO
Sail Lindau’s main waters
Sail around Lindau’s main sailing waters on a route suited to the day’s weather and your experience. Confirm the departure point and whether the trip is seasonal before planning around it.
Look closely at Mangturm for a concrete introduction to Lindau’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Stadtmuseum
Use Stadtmuseum to understand a specific part of Lindau’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
