OVERVIEW
Leh is a high altitude town in northern India, surrounded by barren mountains and irrigated valleys. A former royal palace, monasteries and markets reflect long connections with Tibet and Central Asia. Beyond the central area, palaces and neighbourhoods continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use. The wider destination extends from mountain terrain towards markets, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Altitude requires a slow first day, while road conditions and weather affect excursions. The town is most rewarding as a cultural centre rather than only a base for mountain travel. Monasteries and local neighbourhoods provide essential depth beyond the famous road journeys. Conditions around neighbourhoods differ from those near mountain terrain, making flexible timing useful.

THINGS TO DO
Look closely at Leh Palace for a concrete introduction to Leh’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Visit Soma Monastery with attention to its continuing religious meaning as well as its architecture or history. Dress and behave respectfully, and expect access to change during services.
Trace local history at Donkey Sanctuary
Use Donkey Sanctuary to understand a specific part of Leh’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
