OVERVIEW
Lampedusa is a low island in the central Mediterranean, with rocky coasts, small beaches and a compact town. Fishing, tourism and migration routes all shape its contemporary identity. Island interior and wildlife habitats belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival. Away from the principal landmarks, coastal settlements gives way gradually to wildlife habitats across the wider area.
Swimming and boat trips provide the main appeal, while turtle nesting adds seasonal wildlife interest. The island’s humanitarian role should be approached with sensitivity rather than treated as background. Wildlife habitats draws most attention, but island interior contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. A visit centred only on coastal settlements would overlook coast, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
