OVERVIEW
Lake Van is a large high altitude lake in eastern Turkey, enclosed by volcanic peaks and dry plateaux. Towns, archaeological sites and small islands are spread around its extensive shore. Island interior sits alongside mountain terrain, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. The wider destination extends from mountain terrain towards high peaks, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Boat trips and road journeys provide the main access to churches, castles and mountain views. Distances are long, making one shoreline section a sensible focus. Ancient settlements and volcanic landscapes add substantial depth beyond the shoreline. The relationship between high peaks and lake shore becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
