OVERVIEW
Lake Nakuru is a protected lake region in Kenya’s Rift Valley, surrounded by grassland, woodland and steep escarpments. Rhinos, buffalo, giraffes and numerous birds occupy the compact reserve. Birdlife sits alongside wildlife habitats, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape. Lake shore and wildlife habitats belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Game drives are straightforward and wildlife density is often high. Water levels and bird numbers vary by season, so the lake may look very different between visits. Early drives provide the best balance of cool conditions and active wildlife. The strongest contrast comes between wildlife habitats and woodland, which support different activities and daily rhythms.
