OVERVIEW
Lahemaa is a large protected region in northern Estonia, with forests, bogs, peninsulas and small coastal settlements. Historic manor houses and fishing villages are scattered across the landscape. Away from the principal landmarks, river corridors gives way gradually to forest interior across the wider area. River occupies a different part of the destination from coast, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
Driving, cycling and boardwalks provide easy access to several different environments. The region feels calm and lightly developed, especially outside summer weekends. Seasonal birdlife and bog landscapes add further ecological variety. The relationship between river and coast becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area. Exploring beyond forest interior reveals forest, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
