OVERVIEW
La Rioja is a major wine region in northern Spain, with vineyards, small towns and historic estates spread along the Ebro valley and surrounding hills. Wine production shapes the landscape, economy and architecture. Local food and working vineyards belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival. The destination is physically divided between architecture and vineyards, with roads and settlements linking the two.
Tastings range from family cellars to major modern wineries. Food, village streets and scenic drives provide a fuller experience than a simple sequence of appointments. Local food is encountered differently from architecture, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination. Time spent around vineyards also brings local food into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
