OVERVIEW
La Paz is a high altitude city in Bolivia, built across a steep valley beneath the Andes. Government districts, markets and dense neighbourhoods climb from the centre towards the surrounding plateau. Waterfront occupies a different part of the destination from central streets, giving the wider area a clear physical structure. Away from the principal landmarks, central streets gives way gradually to local food across the wider area.
Cable cars reveal the city’s extraordinary topography and social scale. Altitude, traffic and steep streets can be demanding, but food, markets and public life provide exceptional cultural depth. The relationship between waterfront and markets becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area. Spending time around markets also brings neighbourhoods into view, adding a distinct second layer to the visit.
