OVERVIEW
La Palma is a steep volcanic island in the Canary group, with high ridges, deep ravines and forested slopes. Small towns, banana farms and lava landscapes occupy the narrow coastal zones. Beyond the central area, farms and coastal settlements continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use. The wider destination extends from forest towards coast, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Hiking and stargazing are major strengths, while recent eruption areas reveal the island’s continuing geological activity. Roads are winding, so choosing one or two bases improves the experience. Time spent around forest also brings farms into view, adding a different layer to the visit. Conditions around island interior can differ noticeably from farms, so flexible timing improves the overall experience.

Build a manageable drive through La Palma’s coastal roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as La Palma, choose a route that works from your base.
Road Trips
Half or full day
Hike around Los Tilos laurel forest
Choose a walk around Los Tilos laurel forest that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Watch the night sky in La Palma
Use La Palma’s darkest viewing area for a night-sky session away from the strongest local light. Cloud, moonlight and seasonal access affect visibility, so check conditions before making a special journey.
