OVERVIEW
Komodo is a protected island region in eastern Indonesia, known for giant monitor lizards, dry grassland and some of the world’s richest coral seas. Guided walks provide controlled wildlife encounters, while boat journeys connect reefs, beaches and neighbouring islands. Settlement follows the relationship between harbour and islands, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Heat and currents can be demanding, making experienced operators essential. Responsible wildlife viewing and careful marine practices are vital because both the dragons and reefs face significant tourism pressure. Quieter anchorages and village visits add cultural context beyond the wildlife and diving sites. Spending time around island interior also brings beaches into view, adding a distinct second layer to the visit.
