OVERVIEW
Kochi is a regional city on Shikoku, built around a surviving hilltop castle, market arcades and river corridors. Food is central, especially seared bonito and local produce served in lively communal markets. The transition between coast and markets is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre, with river providing an additional point of connection.
The city also provides access to coastal roads, pilgrimage routes and rural mountain landscapes across the wider prefecture. Markets and evening restaurants give the compact centre a warm, informal character. The contrast between coast and castle becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored. The relationship between mountain terrain and river adds variety without requiring long transfers.
