OVERVIEW
Kiruna is a mining city in northern Sweden, located above the Arctic Circle and undergoing relocation because of ground deformation from the expanding ore mine. Modern civic buildings, Sámi culture and nearby wilderness all contribute to a destination defined by rapid physical and social change. Settlement follows the relationship between central streets and public spaces, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Winter darkness, summer midnight sun and northern lights create strong seasonal contrasts. The relocation process adds an extraordinary contemporary story, with buildings, infrastructure and community life being reorganised around the mine. Outer districts draws most attention, but public spaces contributes equally to the destination’s character and daily life. Central streets provides the most immediate experience, while public spaces offers a quieter and more local perspective.
