OVERVIEW
Khao Yai is a protected forest and savanna region in central Thailand, with waterfalls, viewpoints and extensive road access through varied habitats. Elephants, gibbons, hornbills and deer may be seen, although wildlife encounters depend on patience and responsible distance. Seasonal rainfall changes the balance between open grassland, woodland and wet areas. The transition between woodland and grassland is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Weekends can be busy, while early starts and guided walks provide a quieter experience. Wildlife should be observed at a distance, especially around roads where elephants may appear unexpectedly. Seasonal change influences both animal movement and access to separate habitats. Longer stays make it easier to explore quieter trails beyond the main road circuit.
