OVERVIEW
Kaziranga is a protected savanna and wetland region in north eastern India, shaped by seasonal flooding from the Brahmaputra River. Large populations of rhinoceroses share the grasslands with elephants, wild buffalo, deer and tigers. Camps and surrounding communities add a human dimension to the conservation landscape. The wider destination extends from wetlands towards savanna, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Jeep safaris provide the main access, while changing water levels strongly influence wildlife movement and road conditions. Early and late drives offer the best light, although respectful distance remains essential around rhinoceroses and elephants. Longer stays allow time to explore more than the busiest waterholes and roads. A visit centred only on wildlife habitats would overlook wetlands, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
