OVERVIEW
Kauaʻi is the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands, with deeply eroded mountains, waterfalls and a coastline of beaches, reefs and towering cliffs. Roads circle only part of the island, leaving the interior and north western coast accessible mainly by trail, boat or aircraft. Cliffs and harbour belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Rain varies sharply by location, while hiking, paddling and local food provide very different ways to experience the landscape. Roads reach only part of the coast, preserving a strong sense of wilderness beyond the developed towns and beach areas. The relationship between harbour and waterfalls adds variety without requiring long transfers.
