OVERVIEW
Kashgar is a major oasis city in western China, historically positioned between the Taklamakan Desert and high routes into Central Asia. Markets, mosques and traditional neighbourhoods reflect Uyghur culture, although redevelopment has transformed much of the older urban fabric. The wider destination extends from mountain terrain towards mosques, with local communities occupying the ground between them.
Food, craft and regional trade remain central, while travel requires awareness of extensive state controls and cultural sensitivities. The city’s importance lies not only in surviving monuments but also in its position between desert, oasis and mountain routes. The contrast between mosques and markets becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.
