OVERVIEW
Kars is a high altitude city in eastern Turkey, with broad streets, dark basalt architecture and a large fortress overlooking the urban centre. Russian era planning, mosques and nearby Armenian ruins reflect the region’s complex political history. Settlement follows the relationship between fortifications and mosques, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes. Across the wider destination, local food remains physically connected with ruins, and local settlement follows that relationship.
Winters are severe, while local cheese, honey and distinctive food traditions add warmth to the otherwise austere setting. Excursions towards the surrounding plateau and ancient ruins deepen the sense of a city shaped by frontier geography. The strongest contrast comes between neighbourhoods and ruins, which support different activities and daily rhythms.

THINGS TO DO
Look closely at Kümbet Mosque for a concrete introduction to Kars’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Explore Kars’ ancient ruins
Explore Kars’ ancient ruins to understand the ancient settlement, belief or engineering that shaped Kars. Allow enough time to read the site rather than treating it as a photo stop.
Discover living traditions in Kars
Use Kars’ living traditions to learn about living traditions connected to Kars, choosing respectful, locally led encounters. Avoid treating contemporary communities or religious practice as a performance.
Taste local cheese in Kars
Use Kars’ local cheese as a starting point for tasting food connected to Kars, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Trace local history at Kars Castle
Use Kars Castle to understand a specific part of Kars’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
