OVERVIEW
Karpathos is a long mountainous island in the southern Aegean, with beaches and harbour towns concentrated along the lower coast and isolated villages high in the north. Music, dress and festival traditions remain especially visible in the mountain communities, where local identity has been preserved through relative isolation. The destination is physically divided between beaches and coast, with roads and settlements linking the two, with island interior providing an additional point of connection.
Roads are winding, and choosing more than one base reveals the island’s sharp contrast between coast and uplands. Festivals, village music and local food give the northern communities a cultural presence that is as important as the beaches. Harbour is experienced differently from island interior, so both areas contribute useful but separate perspectives.
