OVERVIEW
Kamchatka is a vast volcanic region in Russia’s far east, where active cones, glaciers, tundra and salmon rivers extend across an almost roadless peninsula. Helicopter journeys, wilderness camps and guided climbs provide access to landscapes that remain difficult to reach independently. The transition between rivers and surrounding landscape is visible across the destination, especially away from its best known centre.
Bears, hot springs and volcanic valleys create extraordinary encounters, although weather, cost and remoteness make every itinerary highly dependent on logistics. Longer expeditions reveal the peninsula’s immense scale far better than a sequence of short helicopter stops. Time spent around glaciers also brings river into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
