Kabul occupies a high valley surrounded by steep dry mountains. Markets, government districts and residential neighbourhoods spread across a large urban area, while historic gardens, mosques and hilltop fortifications preserve older layers. Decades of conflict have transformed much of the city. Beyond the central area, fortifications and mosques continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.

Cultural sites remain significant, but current security conditions are extremely serious and require authoritative guidance. Markets and neighbourhood life continue despite instability, with fortifications and markets providing the wider context. Travel cannot be treated as routine, with fortifications and mountain terrain providing the wider context. Historic gardens and quieter residential areas remain important despite the severe practical limitations. Mosques is encountered differently from fortifications, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
