OVERVIEW
Jiuzhaigou is a high valley region in western China, known for a chain of clear lakes, waterfalls and mixed forest. Tibetan villages and mountain slopes surround the protected landscape. Boardwalks and shuttle buses connect the main areas. Away from the principal landmarks, lakes gives way gradually to forest across the wider area. Beyond the central area, lake shore and forest continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Seasonal colour is central, with autumn foliage especially striking. Visitor numbers are tightly managed and the route is highly organised. The scenery remains exceptional despite the controlled experience. Nearby villages and seasonal landscapes provide more context beyond the organised visitor route. Forest is encountered differently from lakes, making it worthwhile to leave time for both parts of the destination.
