Jaffna is the principal city of Sri Lanka’s northern peninsula, with a dry climate, low rise streets and a strong Tamil cultural identity. Away from the principal landmarks, island interior gives way gradually to lagoon across the wider area.

Food, religious life and local music provide the strongest cultural experiences. Nearby islands and coastal roads add variety, while memorial sites require sensitivity. The city feels distinct from the tropical south in both landscape and social atmosphere. Lagoon provides the most immediate experience, while islands offers a quieter and more local perspective.
