OVERVIEW
Ise-Shima is a peninsula region in central Japan, known for major Shinto shrines, deeply indented bays and a long maritime culture. Forested sacred precincts contrast with pearl farms, fishing ports and small islands. Towns are spread across the region rather than concentrated in one centre. Across the wider area, forest remains closely connected with island interior, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone.
Pilgrimage sites are the cultural focus, while boat trips and coastal drives reveal the wider marine landscape. Seafood is exceptional, especially shellfish and locally cultivated pearls. Travel between areas takes time, making a focused itinerary more rewarding. Forest provides the most immediate experience, while bay offers a quieter and more local perspective.
