OVERVIEW
Ilhabela is a mountainous island off the coast of São Paulo state, with dense Atlantic rainforest covering much of the interior. Beaches, marinas and settlements line the western shore, while the eastern coast remains more remote. Waterfalls and steep trails descend through protected forest. Across the wider area, waterfalls remains closely connected with mountain terrain, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone, with waterfalls providing an additional point of connection.
Sailing, beach time and waterfall walks provide the main experiences. Traffic can be heavy in summer, and biting insects are common in forested areas. The contrast between developed harbour towns and wild eastern landscapes gives the island unusual variety. Time spent around waterfalls also brings mountain terrain into view, adding a different layer to the visit.
