OVERVIEW
Hydra is a rocky island in the Saronic Gulf, centred on a stone harbour town where motor vehicles are prohibited. Houses rise steeply above the waterfront, while monasteries, paths and small coves extend around the island. Donkeys and boats remain important for local transport. Across the wider destination, monasteries remains physically connected with waterfront, and local settlement follows that relationship.
The harbour is busiest during the day, but evenings become calmer after excursion boats leave. Walking routes provide views and access to quieter beaches. The island has a polished cultural atmosphere without the scale of larger resort destinations. A visit centred only on waterfront would overlook harbour, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.

THINGS TO DO
Snorkel around Hydra’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Spend time at Hydra’s rocky coves rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
Hike around Cathedral of Hydra
Choose a walk around Cathedral of Hydra that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
