OVERVIEW
Hydra is a rocky island in the Saronic Gulf, centred on a stone harbour town where motor vehicles are prohibited. Houses rise steeply above the waterfront, while monasteries, paths and small coves extend around the island. Donkeys and boats remain important for local transport. Across the wider destination, monasteries remains physically connected with waterfront, and local settlement follows that relationship.
The harbour is busiest during the day, but evenings become calmer after excursion boats leave. Walking routes provide views and access to quieter beaches. The island has a polished cultural atmosphere without the scale of larger resort destinations. A visit centred only on waterfront would overlook harbour, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
