OVERVIEW
Hue is a historic city in central Vietnam, centred on a vast fortified citadel beside the Perfume River. Palaces, temples and ceremonial gates preserve the former imperial capital, while royal tombs and pagodas extend along the river corridor. Modern residential and commercial districts surround the historic areas. Across the wider area, river remains closely connected with fortifications, rather than forming an isolated visitor zone, with temples providing an additional point of connection.
The citadel requires time because its scale is much larger than it first appears. River trips, local food and visits to the royal tombs add different perspectives on court culture. The city feels calmer than the largest national centres and rewards a slower pace. Conditions around fortifications can differ noticeably from river, so flexible timing improves the overall experience.
