OVERVIEW
Houston is a vast city in south eastern Texas, built across a flat coastal plain and organised through highways, business districts and extensive residential neighbourhoods. Energy, medicine and aerospace have shaped its economy, while migration has produced one of the country’s most diverse populations. The city has no single compact centre, with coast and local food providing the wider context. Museums occupies a different part of the destination from neighbourhoods, giving the wider area a clear physical structure.
Food is a major strength, with strong Mexican, Vietnamese, African, Indian and Gulf Coast influences. Museums and space exploration provide substantial cultural and scientific interest. Distances are significant and a car is usually necessary, but individual neighbourhoods reward focused exploration. Exploring beyond local food reveals residential districts, a part of the destination that short visits often miss.
