OVERVIEW
Homer sits on the shore of Kachemak Bay in southern Alaska, with a dramatic mountain and glacier backdrop across the water. The town is spread along hillsides and a narrow spit extending into the bay. Fishing, marine transport and small scale arts all contribute to its identity. Bay and harbour belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Boat trips reach wildlife, trails and remote communities across the bay, while the spit contains harbours, restaurants and working docks. Weather changes quickly and views may disappear into cloud. The town’s dispersed form makes a car useful, but the relationship between land, sea and mountains is immediate. Routes through mountain terrain lead naturally towards wildlife habitats, so the experience changes without requiring long transfers.
