OVERVIEW
Hangzhou is a major city in eastern China, centred on West Lake and surrounded by tea covered hills. Causeways, gardens and temples create a carefully composed landscape, while modern commercial and residential districts spread far beyond the historic core. The city has long been associated with poetry, silk and refined urban culture. Gardens and villages belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Walking and cycling around the lake reveal changing views through bridges, trees and pavilions. Tea villages provide a quieter contrast with the busy centre. Crowds are heavy on weekends, making early mornings especially valuable. The relationship between temples and lake shore becomes clearest when the destination is explored over more than one area.
