OVERVIEW
Hampi is a broad archaeological landscape in southern India, spread among granite hills, banana fields and the Tungabhadra River. Temples, markets, palaces and water systems reveal the scale of the former Vijayanagara capital. Small settlements and farms remain active within the wider area. Beyond the principal centre, farms and markets continue to influence how the destination is organised.
Exploration requires time because the ruins are dispersed across several zones. Bicycles, scooters and guides help connect the main sites. Sunrise and sunset reveal the extraordinary relationship between architecture and the boulder landscape. A visit centred only on palaces would overlook river, where the wider landscape and local activity remain visible.
