OVERVIEW
Gyeongju is a historic city in south eastern South Korea, once the capital of the Silla kingdom. Large burial mounds, palace remains and Buddhist sites are spread across the urban area and surrounding hills. The centre is low rise, with parks and cycling routes linking many of the main sites. Settlement follows the relationship between lakes and museums, which remains visible beyond the main visitor routes.
Exploration works best at a slower pace, combining archaeology with lakeside walks and temple visits. Museums provide essential context for the royal tombs and sculpture. The city is calm, spacious and especially rewarding in spring and autumn. Conditions around temples can differ noticeably from lakes, so flexible timing improves the overall experience.
