OVERVIEW
Guernsey is a small Channel Island with rugged southern cliffs, sandy northern bays and a capital built around a natural harbour. Granite houses, narrow lanes and coastal fortifications reflect centuries of maritime life. The island has its own political institutions and a distinct local identity. Away from the principal landmarks, beaches gives way gradually to harbour across the wider area.
Walking and cycling are easy ways to explore, though roads are narrow. Wartime fortifications, small museums and coastal cafés add variety beyond the beaches. The compact scale makes it possible to see several different shorelines in one day. Exploration centred only on harbour would miss coast, where local activity and landscape remain equally visible.
