OVERVIEW
Guadeloupe is an island group in the eastern Caribbean, centred on two main islands joined by bridges. One side is mountainous and covered in rainforest, while the other has flatter farmland, beaches and limestone coast. Smaller surrounding islands add fishing villages and quieter shorelines. Villages, farms and quieter shoreline areas remain visible beyond the principal visitor centres.
Driving reveals rapid changes between forest, sugar cane fields and coastal towns. Food, music and language reflect African, European and regional influences. Beaches vary widely, and the mountainous interior deserves as much attention as the resort areas. The contrast between rainforest and coast becomes clearest when more than one part of the destination is explored.

THINGS TO DO
Snorkel around Guadeloupe’s principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
Taste regional food scene in Guadeloupe
Use Guadeloupe’s regional food scene as a starting point for tasting food connected to Guadeloupe, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Find Guadeloupe’s coastline
Spend time at Guadeloupe’s coastline rather than treating every nearby beach as interchangeable. Swimming conditions, access and facilities can vary, so check locally before entering the water. Choose it only if it fits your base and route.
