OVERVIEW

Great Zimbabwe is an extensive archaeological site in south eastern Zimbabwe, built between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. Stone enclosures, passageways and a hill complex reveal the scale of a major political and trading centre. The masonry was constructed without mortar and remains remarkably intact. Surrounding landscape sits alongside main settlements, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.

The landscape and engineering are far more impressive than a brief photograph suggests. A slower visit allows more time for everyday landscapes and places beyond the best known sights.
