OVERVIEW
Great Zimbabwe is an extensive archaeological site in south eastern Zimbabwe, built between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. Stone enclosures, passageways and a hill complex reveal the scale of a major political and trading centre. The masonry was constructed without mortar and remains remarkably intact. Surrounding landscape sits alongside main settlements, placing the principal sights within a broader inhabited landscape.
Guides add essential context on architecture, trade and the site’s importance to national identity. Walking between the valley ruins and hill complex requires time and heat tolerance. The landscape and engineering are far more impressive than a brief photograph suggests. A slower visit allows more time for everyday landscapes and places beyond the best known sights.
