Gold Coast is a large coastal city in south eastern Queensland, with long beaches, canals and high rise resort districts extending along the shore. Surf culture, theme parks and nightlife drive much of the visitor economy, while residential areas spread inland towards forested hills. Different beach neighbourhoods have noticeably different atmospheres, with villages and beaches providing the wider context. Beyond the central area, beaches and rainforest continue to organise settlement, movement and everyday land use.
Swimming and surfing dominate the coastline, though conditions vary with currents and swell. The central resort district is energetic and heavily developed, while southern beaches and the hinterland feel calmer. A car helps connect the coast with rainforest, villages and inland viewpoints. Spending time around beaches also brings villages into view, adding a distinct second layer to the visit.
