OVERVIEW
Gjirokastër climbs a steep hillside in southern Albania, with grey stone houses, narrow lanes and a large fortress overlooking the valley. Ottoman era mansions preserve elaborate interiors and defensive features, while the lower town contains modern shops and residential districts. The surrounding mountains remain visible from almost every street. Museums and central streets belong to the same connected landscape, although they often feel distinct on arrival.
Walking is demanding because of the slopes and polished stone surfaces. Museums and restored houses provide insight into domestic life, while the fortress gives the clearest view of the settlement’s form. Evening hours are calmer and reveal a more residential atmosphere. Fortifications is experienced differently from museums, so both areas contribute useful but separate perspectives.
