OVERVIEW

Galle is a historic city on Sri Lanka’s south western coast, centred on a fortified old town built by successive European powers. Stone ramparts enclose churches, warehouses, houses and narrow streets overlooking the sea. Modern neighbourhoods and a busy commercial centre extend beyond the walls.

Walking the ramparts at sunset is the clearest introduction, while cafés, museums and restored houses fill the interior streets. The fort is polished and visitor oriented, but schools, homes and religious buildings keep it inhabited. Outside the walls, the modern city and nearby fishing coast provide a less curated picture of everyday life.
