Galena occupies a hilly landscape in north western Illinois, with a historic centre of brick commercial buildings and steep residential streets. The town prospered through lead mining and river trade, leaving an unusually intact nineteenth century streetscape. Residential districts and historic centre form separate but closely connected parts of the destination.

Steep streets lead past nineteenth century houses, galleries and small museums, while scenic roads reach farms and river valley viewpoints. The compact centre is polished and heavily visitor oriented at weekends, but its preserved architecture and wooded topography give it a stronger identity than many similar regional towns. Winter is quiet, while autumn colour brings the largest crowds.
