OVERVIEW

Freetown stretches between steep green hills and one of the world’s largest natural harbours. Founded as a settlement for formerly enslaved people, it developed a distinctive Krio culture that remains visible in language, churches and neighbourhoods. Markets, government districts and dense housing follow the narrow coastal plain, while the forested peninsula rises directly behind the city.

Lumley and the wider peninsula provide beaches and mountain views within reach of the crowded centre. Music, food and street life reveal the city’s strongest cultural character, but traffic, rainfall and limited infrastructure complicate movement. Its liberation history and dramatic setting make it far more than a simple transit point.
