OVERVIEW
Frankfurt stands on the Main River and combines one of Europe’s most prominent skylines with a compact reconstructed historic centre. Banking, trade fairs and transport define much of the modern city, while museums line the river and dense residential districts extend beyond the business core. Its role as a global hub is real, but it remains a lived in regional city rather than only an airport stop.
A line of major museums along the river covers art, film, architecture and cultural history, while an older southern district is known for apple wine taverns. The reconstructed medieval square contrasts sharply with the banking skyline. Airport and trade fair traffic give the city a transient feel, but the cultural offer supports a dedicated stay.

THINGS TO DO
Taste wine around Frankfurt’s wine-growing area with enough time to understand its connection to Frankfurt’s soils, grape varieties and producers. Check opening days and transport before visiting several cellars.
Look closely at Höchst Old Town for a concrete introduction to Frankfurt’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Trace local history at Historic Half-timbered Houses
Use Historic Half-timbered Houses to understand a specific part of Frankfurt’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Focus on Museumsufer for a collection that adds real context to Frankfurt. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
