OVERVIEW
Foumban is a historic town in western Cameroon and the cultural centre of the Bamum kingdom. The royal palace, founded under Sultan Ibrahim Njoya, houses collections connected with court history and the Bamum script. Metalwork, beadwork, carving and textiles remain active across workshops and markets, making artistic production part of everyday town life.
The palace museum provides essential context for Bamum political history, while artisan quarters show how carving, casting and embroidery continue as living trades. The town is compact, but visitor infrastructure is basic. Local guidance helps distinguish genuine workshops and explain the significance of royal symbols and craft traditions.
