OVERVIEW
Fogo is a steep volcanic island dominated by a nearly symmetrical cone rising from a broad caldera. Villages, vineyards and coffee farms occupy the outer slopes, while settlements inside the crater have repeatedly adapted to lava flows. The port town of São Filipe provides the main urban centre.
Climbing the volcano is demanding but offers exceptional views across the crater and sea. Local wine and coffee reflect the fertile volcanic soil. Roads and services are limited, but the landscape and resilient communities make the island unusually compelling. Local guides improve safety and add context to the geological landscape.

THINGS TO DO
Take in the view from Bordeira mountain ridge hike
Set aside time at Bordeira mountain ridge hike specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season.
Taste local coffee in Fogo
Use Fogo’s local coffee as a starting point for tasting food connected to Fogo, choosing regional dishes or produce rather than a generic international meal. Opening days may shape the plan.
Taste wine around Fogo’s wine-growing area with enough time to understand its connection to Fogo’s soils, grape varieties and producers. Check opening days and transport before visiting several cellars.
Use Fogo’s main climbing area as the focus for a climbing day suited to your ability. Local access, equipment and weather matter, so go with a qualified guide when conditions or routes are unfamiliar.
