OVERVIEW
The Florida Keys form a chain of low coral islands linked by bridges from the mainland to Key West. Mangroves, reefs and shallow channels surround small towns, marinas and residential communities. The long overseas highway provides constant water views and connects islands with very different levels of development.
Snorkelling, fishing and boating are central, while historic Key West offers architecture, nightlife and museums. Driving the entire chain takes time, especially with traffic. Staying in more than one area reveals quieter natural sections beyond the busiest towns. Spending time around mangroves also brings islands into view, adding a distinct second layer to the visit.

THINGS TO DO
Trace Florida Keys’ historic quarter
Use Florida Keys’ historic quarter to understand a specific part of Florida Keys’s past rather than viewing it without context. Allow time for interpretation, not only the most photographed exterior.
Visit Florida Keys’ principal museums
Focus on Florida Keys’ principal museums for a collection that adds real context to Florida Keys. Check current exhibitions and opening days, then allow enough time for the sections most relevant to the destination.
Spend an evening in Florida Keys
Spend an evening around Florida Keys’ main evening district, choosing venues that fit the local scene rather than assuming every district offers the same atmosphere. Opening nights and late transport can vary.
Admire Florida Keys’ landmark architecture
Look closely at Florida Keys’ landmark architecture for a concrete introduction to Florida Keys’s built character. Notice the materials, street setting and later changes as well as the main façade.
Fish Florida Keys’ principal waters
Arrange a legal fishing trip around Florida Keys’ principal fishing waters with local guidance on seasons, permits and suitable methods. Weather and catches vary, so the experience should not promise a particular result.
Snorkel around Florida Keys’ principal snorkelling waters only when sea conditions and access are suitable. Use local guidance where currents or reefs are unfamiliar, and never promise particular marine-life sightings.
