OVERVIEW
Fish River Canyon cuts through the arid south of Namibia, forming a long sequence of deep bends, cliffs and rocky plateaux. Viewpoints along the rim reveal the scale, while the river itself flows only seasonally. Rim roads, riverbeds and exposed rock layers reveal the depth of the landscape.
Most visitors experience the canyon from rim viewpoints, while a demanding multi day hike follows the floor only during cooler months and requires permits. Sunrise and evening light reveal the strongest colour and depth in the rock. Heat, exposure and long driving distances make careful timing more important than trying to cover every viewpoint.

THINGS TO DO
Watch the night sky in Fish River Canyon
Use Fish River Canyon’s darkest viewing area for a night-sky session away from the strongest local light. Cloud, moonlight and seasonal access affect visibility, so check conditions before making a special journey.
Drive Fish River Canyon’s desert roads
Build a manageable drive through Fish River Canyon’s desert roads, allowing for stops and slower roads. In a destination as spread out as Fish River Canyon, choose a route that works from your base.
Road Trips
Half or full day
Walk Fish River Canyon’s desert trails
Choose a walk around Fish River Canyon’s desert trails that matches your time, fitness and current conditions. Check the route and weather locally instead of assuming every trail is accessible year-round.
Hiking
2 hours to full day
Take in the view from canyons
Set aside time at canyons specifically for the natural panorama, not merely as a stop between activities. Visibility and access can change with weather and season.
